How To Look Beautiful Naturally Every Day

In a world full of AI “glow-ups”, fancy makeup routines, and 20″ “buss downs”, embracing your natural beauty is an important form of self-care. Now, don’t get me wrong, this is not an anti-makeup, anti-weave blog post. I love a full glam look and I have multiple wigs (each of which have their own names, but I digress).

But, especially if you spend a lot of time on social, it’s easy to forget that those things are not the end-all in beauty. And when you’re a busy Mom, it can feel like one more thing you’re doing wrong, if you don’t have the time, money, or energy to indulge in those things.

Taking care of the natural features that God gave you BEFORE adding on your favorite enhancements will go a long way in improving your self-esteem and helping you feel good whether or not you’re wearing a full face of makeup.

Glow Up, Naturally: Easy Beauty Tips You’ll Actually Use!

1. Beauty Sleep, But Make it Luxe

You’re probably already using a satin scarf or bonnet, but what about your pillowcase? If it’s cotton, it’s time switch it up! Try swapping for a satin or silk one and watch your hair and skin reap the benefits.

Hair Goals

  • A satin or silk pillowcase means less friction against your hair, which means sleeker twist outs and better-preserved braids while you sleep.
  • Unlike cotton, these fabrics won’t suck the moisture out of your hair, leaving it soft and healthy.

Skin Wins

  • Satin and silk are gentle on your skin, helping to prevent overnight moisture loss and those annoying sleep lines and wrinkles.
  • If you have sensitive skin, you’ll love how these materials feel – no more irritation or breakouts!

2. Speaking of Beauty Sleep…

You already know this, but it bears repeating: getting enough rest at night is so important! When you’re well-rested, you look and feel your best. A quick rundown of the benefits of proper rest:

Benefits

  • No dark circles and puffiness from lack of sleep
  • Nighttime rest gives your skin time to repair itself, so you’ll wake up with a naturally more even and radiant complexion

Sleep Tips

  • Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time each day, even on weekends.
  • Create a relaxing bedtime routine to signal to your body that it’s time to sleep. Think warm baths, calming music, or a good book.
  • Structure your kids’ bedtime routines around yours so you can start after they’re down for the night. Or enlist your partner’s help. Maybe they take on bedtime and you straighten the kitchen at the end of the night.
  • Put away your phone and laptop at least an hour before bed. That blue light is messing with your sleep!
  • Make sure your bedroom is dark, quiet, and cool – the perfect environment for sweet dreams.

3. H2-Oh-So-Gorgeous

Staying well-hydrated is a key beauty tip for natural beauty. Not only is it an essential for helping your entire body run properly, but it’s also pretty much a magic potion for your healthy skin, hair, and nails.

Skin Goals

  • Think of water as a natural moisturizer. It keeps your skin hydrated, bouncy, and glowing.
  • Water helps flush out toxins, which can mean fewer breakouts and a clearer complexion.

Hair & Nail Goals

  • Water nourishes your hair from the roots, leading to stronger, healthier strands.
  • Brittle nails? That can be a sign that you’re not getting enough water. Try increasing your intake to help. You can also try vitamins, which we’ll get to in just a minute!

Hydration Hacks

  • I like to make little tick marks on my wall calendar every time I have to refill a tumbler. My refill goal is usually 3-4 depending on the size of my tumbler.
  • Not a fan of the taste of water? You can try adding some fruit or herbs to your water for a little flavor boost. I used to love Propel packets, myself!
  • If you tend to look up at the end of the day and realize you only had a glass or two of water, try setting hourly reminders on your phone.

4. Feed Your Glow

Natural beauty is all about what’s going on inside! Make sure you’re getting all the vitamins and minerals your body needs to look and feel its best.

Nutrition Tips

  • Make sure your diet is full of healthy fats and protein, which promote healthy skin and hair
  • Consider a multivitamin and specific supplements, but check with your healthcare provider first
  • Right now, I take my same prenatal vitamin from when I was pregnant with my twins and an Iron supplement.

5. Skincare: Keep it Simple, Sweetie

Forget those 10-step routines! A simple, effective skincare routine is all you need to work wonders for your skin.

Quick Basic Skincare Routine

Gentle Cleanser: Wash your face twice a day with a mild cleanser to remove dirt and makeup without drying out your skin.

Hydrating Toner: A hydrating toner hydrates and nourishes skin and preps it for the next steps.

Quality Moisturizer: Find a moisturizer you love and use it daily to keep your skin hydrated and happy. Worried about thick creams? Save the thicker formulas for nighttime and go with a lightweight moisturizer during the day.

Proper Sunscreen: Seriously, don’t skip this! Sunscreen protects your skin from harmful UV rays, preventing premature aging, hyperpigmentation, and the big bad, skin cancer.

Treatment Serums: If you have specific skin concerns, consider adding a serum to your routine. You can easily target issues like dark spots, acne, or fine lines.

The video below goes into my simple dry skin skincare routine in more detail.

Skincare Reminders

  • Patch Test: Always try new products on a small area first to make sure your skin doesn’t freak out.
  • Consistency is Key: Stick to your routine morning and night for the best results.
  • Ask the Experts: If you have any major skin concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out to a dermatologist.

6. Inner Peace = Outer Glow

Because we don’t have time for frown lines and wrinkles from worrying about things that are completely outside our control! Stress can wreak havoc on your skin and overall well-being. So, take some time to prioritize your mental and emotional health.

Tips for Finding Your Zen:

  • I find that affirmations also help when I’m feeling insecure or dealing with imposter syndrome.
  • Try journaling! If you’re in conflict with a family member or friend, write out your feelings about the situation. It will help you gather your thoughts and then figure out how best to move forward.
  • Make time for connection. Spending time with your partner, family, and friends strengthens those bonds AND improves your own mood.
  • No money to hire a sitter for date night? These at creative home date night ideas are easy and fun, so you can spend QT with your partner and save a few bucks.
  • Need a little extra help? We’ve all been there! If you’re struggling, don’t hesitate to talk to a therapist or counselor.

Feeling a little unmotivated these days? We’ve all been there too! I wrote this post especially for moms who need a little push to keep going when your brain is telling you to hop right back in bed.

7. Spritz, Spritz, Baby

Never underestimate the power of a good fragrance! Whether you’re into subtle skin scents or bold, vibrant powerhouses, the right scent can boost your mood, confidence, and overall aura. Try adding a few spritzes of your favorite scent during your morning routine.

Fragrance Tips

  • Experiment with different scents until you find one that feels like “you.”
  • When applying, Focus on pulse points like your wrists, neck, and behind your ears. I like to do behind my knees and the small of my back as well.
  • Remember, you ARE the special occasion! Don’t save your favorite scents for special date nights or heading out with your besties. You deserve a little dopamine boost on your regular days when you’re just hanging around the house or running a few errands as well!

8. Get Moving

Exercise isn’t just about physical health; it does amazing things for your beauty too!

Benefits of Exercise

  • A good workout gets your blood flowing, delivering oxygen and nutrients to your skin for a natural, beautiful glow.
  • Working out helps reduce stress and releases endorphins, which will improve your mood
  • With regular exercise, you’ll have more energy, so you’ll look and feel more vibrant.

Exercise Tips

  • Whether you’re working out at home or at the gym, choose activities you actually enjoy. Your workout doesn’t have to be excruciating in order for you to reap the benefits.
  • If you’re new to exercise, or you have a lot going on with the kiddos, don’t stress over it. Start with shorter workouts and gradually build time and intensity as your schedule (and fitness level) allows.
  • Create a fitness routine for yourself. I recently started a 3-2-1 schedule after hearing about it on the Balanced Black Girl podcast: 3x a week: strength training, 2x a week: mobility improvement (think yoga, stretching, etc.) 1x day: at least 30 minutes of cardio (I love a morning walk when I have time).
