Share The Love

Let’s be honest, cleaning and organizing are never going to be as fun as say, spending the day at Six Flags. BUT, when it comes to the question of how to make decluttering fun, there are a few tips and tricks that can make the process a little more enjoyable.

Welcome to Part 2 of my decluttering how-to series! If you missed my FREE decluttering checklist in Part 1 on how to declutter when you’re overwhelmed, start there and then come back to this post!

Now that you have your marching orders for decluttering your space, let’s just get one thing straight. Decluttering is 100% necessary, but it doesn’t have to be boring.

9 Ways To Make Decluttering Fun

1. REFRAME

I’ve actually started to do this with my littles and it helps somewhat with my 7 year old. The jury’s still out with my middle children, but we’re working on it!

I try to think of decluttering as less of a chore and more of an act of self-care. I tell my kids (and myself!) that we keep our space clean so we can actually enjoy it.

When I’m lacking motivation to keep going, I look ahead to how nice it will be to stretch out across the couch in a clean, uncluttered living room with a cup of something hot and a good podcast playing. It definitely helps!

2. TREAT YOURSELF

Before you get started, why not grab a fancy coffee or even a nice candle to burn while you’re handling business?

3. PLAY MUSIC

I’ll also play a few podcasts, an audiobook, or even find a good “clean-with-me” video on YouTube to play in the background.

It gives your mind something else to focus on while your hands are busy with decluttering and definitely makes the whole process go by a lot faster. If you have older kids, try letting them pick the music.

4. INVITE A CLOSE FRIEND

You may not necessarily need actual help with your space, but someone to laugh and gossip with will definitely speed up your decluttering session. And afterwards, you can go grab lunch together!

5. FIND YOUR TRIBE

There are a ton of decluttering and organization FB groups. Join a community that resonates with you and start engaging. Maybe you can find an accountability partner who will help keep you motivated along your decluttering journey.

A lot of times, there are different challenges in some of these groups to participate in as well. A little healthy competition goes a long way in keeping yourself committed and making decluttering fun.

6. DON’T WAIT UNTIL YOU’RE ON A STRICT DEADLINE

I mentioned this briefly in Part 1, but it bears repeating here. If you have a holiday party coming up, don’t wait until the week before to start decluttering. If you’re moving next Spring, don’t wait until February to start decluttering either (talking to myself, now!).

If you’re decluttering in advance of an important event, make sure you give yourself plenty of time to get it all done. Nothing adds stress and drama to a task like waiting until the last minute. Ask me how I know!

7. DONATE UNWANTED ITEMS

For a lot of us, the hardest part of decluttering is deciding which items you keep and which ones you get rid of. Okay, you haven’t worn that sweater in three seasons, but it’s still in pristine condition! Should you really get rid of it? Spoiler alert: YES, you should.

For me, the thought of donating items that are still in really good shape to folks who need them makes it a lot easier to get rid of them. I know they’ll be put to good use. You can look for local charities, clothing drives, or even Buy Nothing FB groups for your community.

I have also posted porch pickups in my neighborhood group for things we no longer needed like the twins’ infant swings once they outgrew them.

8. TAKE BEFORE & AFTER PICS

You don’t have to share these on social (unless you want to brag a bit, which is totally fine!). But, sometimes, especially when you’re in the midst of a huge project, it’s hard to really see all the progress you’ve made.

Pictures don’t lie, so taking them before and after you start decluttering will help prove to yourself how hard you’ve worked! It’s okay to take a moment to pat yourself on the back!

9. REWARD YOURSELF

No, this is not the same thing as treating yourself at the beginning of your decluttering session. This is treating yourself AT THE END! See how that’s totally different?

But seriously, if you’ve just spent the better part of your afternoon organizing your pantry, you definitely deserve a little something special when you’re finished. It doesn’t have to be something extravagant. Think about the ways you like to pour into yourself and then make it happen, sis!
