What Are 90s Style Jeans Called?

The term “90s style jeans” refers to any style of jeans popularized in the 90s. Wide leg jeans (we called them hip huggers!) Mom jeans, and the high rise 90s straight style all fall under this category. This post is about high rise 90s straight leg jeans, but if you’re looking for wide leg jeans outfit ideas, I have a post for that too(:

What Are 90s Straight Jeans?

“90s straight” refers to a specific style of jean popularized in the 90s (hence the name). Different brands will have different interpretations of the trend. I mostly see more rigid denim. These styles are slim throughout the butt, hips, and thighs and slightly looser as you get to the lower legs and ankles to create a “straight” silhouette.

I’ve also seen what we usually call “Mom jeans” that have a tapered, slim fit throughout the entire leg, referred to as 90s straight.

If you don’t have a pair of high-rise 90s straight jeans already, this season is a great time to try a few different versions and see what speaks to you.

What Body Type Is Best For High Rise Straight Leg Jeans?

So, terms like “high waist”, “high rise”, and even “straight leg” can differ greatly from brand to brand. This can make things a little confusing, but here’s the good news: that also means just about anyone can wear high rise straight leg jeans.

The key is to figure out which version rise flatters your particular body type. For example, try a few different pairs of high-rise denim and see what rise you best. Once you figure that out, measure the rise yourself, and then check that against the measurements for denim you’re considering adding to your wardrobe.

There are sooo many options when it comes to a great pair of jeans. Here are a few tips to narrow down your choices and save time.

As far as high rise 90s straight leg jeans, you definitely want to try this style across brands to determine which interpretation of the trend makes you feel your best.

My favorite pair, for example, is fitted through the hips but not overly so. They have no stretch, they’re slightly distressed, and they’re sooo comfortable and flattering.

This particular brand tends to get it right when it comes to plus size denim, so I’ve gone back several times for different styles as well!

Bottom line? Plus size girls, girls with shorter torsos, longer torsos, etc. can ALL wear 90s straight jeans! Ready for some outfit ideas?

Great jeans are definitely a staple for a well-rounded, stylish wardrobe.

Date Night

I seriously love how versatile this style is! Denim is pretty versatile in general, but I think the 90s straight goes from day to night exceptionally well.

A fitted pair like what I’m wearing in the post highlights your curves in ALL the right places and makes a great foundational piece for date night.

Transitional Fall Or Spring Outfit

As you know, a great pair of jeans is a year-round staple. Paired here with a neutral tank and classic white sneakers for a chic transitional look for Fall or Spring.

Neutral tops like this one are another year-round staple. Add layers as temps cool, ditch the layers as they warm back up!

Dinner With Your Besties

Paired here with another classic piece! Pick a blazer in your best color and cut and add a solid tee or bodysuit underneath for a polished, “put-together” vibe in less than 5 minutes.

This season, blazers are still a tad oversized but cinched in at the waist for a bit of definition. I love a classic Black, but there are sooo many other gorgeous colors as well!

Running Errands

Whether my errands consist of grocery shopping and handling business or simply smelling candles and perfume and looking at seasonal decor for the house (what I call fun errands lol), I love to look good while doing them.

I love to style my 90s straight jeans with a cute sweater and sneakers so I’m comfortable while running around, but still feel good about what I’m wearing.
